AUSSIE

Jo Ann Hirsch is a veteran educator with 29 years experience in the New York City Department of Education.  Her experience includes: teaching all subjects in grades 3 and 4 in District 8 in the Bronx, teaching mathematics and science in grade 5 in a middle school in District 8 in the Bronx, providing professional development in mathematics in an elementary school as well as on the district level in District 8, and assisting the Director of Assessment and School Improvement in District 8.  

For the past five years, JoAnn Hirsch has been an AUSSIE Mathematics Consultant providing professional development in a variety of elementary schools as well as participating in the Region 1 Calendar Days Mathematics Workshops.  She has supported schools in providing standards based instruction, analyzing data and using data to inform differentiated instruction. In addition, JoAnn Hirsch supports schools in preparing for the School Quality Review.

JoAnn Hirsch attributes her success as an educator of students as well as a coach of teachers to being able to cultivate relationships based on mutual respect. Once students and teachers begin to trust her, they share her passion and excitement for mathematics.  In addition to modeling best practices to improve teacher pedagogy, she models techniques that foster children’s self-esteem.
