Julie Ditton

Julie Ditton has 37 years teaching experience, nationally and internationally.
She was a classroom teacher in several elementary schools in Australia prior to working as a Math consultant in schools in Jersey City, New York City and Connecticut.

Julie’s consultancy work since joining AUSSIE Professional Developers has focused on:

presenting district-wide mathematics workshops to teachers, directed by supervisors in Jersey City School District and school-based workshops with teachers K-2 following planning with administrators;

  • facilitating planned learning experiences, demonstrating/ modeling/coaching a variety of teaching strategies;
  • providing consultancy expertise to Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade teachers in Jersey City School District and teachers of grades K-5 in  Connecticut and New York City schools;
  • conducting Math workshops for parents in Jersey City and New York City;
  • developing frameworks and resources to improve learning outcomes for a wide range of student ability in mathematics;
  • assisting teachers and coaches to set short and long term goals to improve/extend teaching practices;

  • demonstrating best teaching practices with ongoing coaching support for teachers to ensure students develop numeracy skills and mathematical knowledge that enables them to engage in activities and enjoy them;
  • guiding teachers to assess students’ mathematical competence through observation and detailed analysis of their work, to monitor progress and plan instruction according to the data collected.

Prior to her consultancy work in USA, Julie’s duties at elementary schools included:
  • working as the school’s curriculum co-ordinator;
  • facilitating grade level meetings;
  • presenting workshops for elementary teachers: preparing and planning ‘hands on’ activities, assessment tasks, recording and using assessment information effectively;
  • planning collaboratively with team members to write school-based curriculum documents e.g. Early Years Philosophy;
  • training parents to be tutors, providing support for low achieving students in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade;
  • working with grade level colleagues to develop a series of Integrated Studies units of work across the 8 key curriculum learning areas;
  • being a mentor for 1st year teachers;
  • providing intervention/support for the slow learner, including private tuition.

Julie’s international teaching experiences:
  • working as a classroom teacher- exchangee in British Columbia, Canada;
  • visiting schools in Minneapolis, Seattle and Oregon , USA and Ottawa, Canada and speaking about Comparative Education trends with administrators and teaching staff;
  • presenting workshops at NW Math Conference in Oregon;
  • teaching Academically and Intellectually Gifted students in North Carolina, as part of the Visiting International Faculty program, specifically established for recruiting teachers to work in schools in selected areas of USA;
  • attending annual educational conventions, as a member of Alpha Delta Kappa International Sorority of Educators, where she was invited to be a guest speaker and present educational workshops.
