Olga Evans
Olga Evans’ work over the past 20 years has centered around developing literacy programs, support structures and curriculum for students, K-12, who struggle with reading and writing. Over the past five years - working in economically and socially diverse K-8 schools in New York City – Olga has provided professional development for classroom teachers, special education teachers, reading coaches, para-professionals, ESL & Dual language teachers, school administrators and regional coordinators on how to improve the quality of literacy teaching, learning and accountability.
Olga has worked extensively in ‘Reading First’ Schools (part of the No Child Left Behind reform) in applying research-based reading instruction, curriculum and various assessment tools to prevent or remediate reading failure in early readers. Through this work she is well qualified to support school implement the Response to Intervention model.
In the area of adolescent literacy, Olga works with school staff to implement research based literacy instruction to improve comprehension for all students. She also provides whole staff professional development in ‘best literacy practices’ and targeted instruction based on assessments, for students who struggle with content area comprehension.
Prior to her consultancy work in the United States, Olga implemented and facilitated a number of literacy intervention programs in Elementary school, including Reading Recovery. She provided professional development to content area teachers in Middle and High School staff on ‘best literacy practices’ and facilitated transition programs between elementary school and Middle School. During that time she also developed and delivered intervention programs for struggling readers and writers.
Olga’s educational interests are research based approaches to reading instruction - especially for students with learning problems, teacher education and professional development and home-school partnerships.
Olga’s qualifications include degrees in and expertise in Early Childhood Literacy, Special Education, Middle Years Literacy, Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Education, Reading Recovery, ‘Bridging the Gap’ and Music Education.
