Sheena Hervey - AUSSIE Chief Education Officer
SHEENA HERVEY is a highly respected leader in education and acclaimed
author, who has had an enormous impact on the field of reading in her
25-year career. Ms. Hervey is the Past President of the New Zealand
Reading Association (1998-99), and a former member of the National
Advisory Group looking at reading in the middle and upper primary
school. She has authored several publications including “To Test Or Not
To Test,” (1998) “The Reader as Learner” (1996) as well as
international conference papers such as “Who said New Zealand Teachers
Don’t Teach Phonics?” which was presented at the 2000 International
Reading Association World Congress in Auckland, NZ.
In 2003, Ms. Hervey joined AUSSIE, Inc., a leading provider of
customized professional development services for K-12 schools in the US
and abroad, as an active consultant. She has worked as a senior
literacy consultant in New York City and San Diego, California,
providing research-based teacher training and professional development
workshops for principals and has recently been appointed to the
position of Educational Director of AUSSIE
Prior to her consultancy work in the United States, Ms. Hervey was the
Director of Primary Programs at Dunedin College of Education in New
Zealand from 1999-2002 where she was responsible for staff
appointments, recruitment of students, accreditation and monitoring of
all courses and Chair of Teaching Practice Committee. During that time
she also led the professional leadership of 1400 students and 110 staff.
Ms. Hervey has held numerous positions on national professional
committees and has also presented many keynote addresses on the topic
of literacy.
