Literacy Instruction at YKOM: An Update

Blog entry posted December 11th, 2009 by Maria Utevsky

I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you one of the great partnerships that is happening at Yeshiva Ketana of Manhattan. Below is an excerpt from YKOM parent newsletter The Compass.

Mr. Elliott Koreman, YKOM's literacy consultant, spoke to Pre1A and first grade parents about appropriate expectations for literacy acquisition on Wednesday evening, December 9th. Mr. Koreman is a former principal and is currently a professor at Stern College as well as being an AUSSIE consultant for two Yeshivos. Mr. Koreman visits our school each Thursday. During that day, he teaches both our faculty as well as our students. In the morning, he works with Nursery, Pre1A, and Kindergarten. In the afternoon, Mr. Koreman gives model lessons in grades one through three. His work in the early childhood grades is to help teachers immerse the children in literacy. Through shared readings and read alouds the children are exposed to meaning of text (semantics), the way written language works (syntax), and the way letters and words sound (phonics). Mr. Koreman discussed with the parents the methodology used in bringing literacy to the classroom and the benchmark we are successfully reaching in Pre 1A and first grade. – from The Compass, December 11,  2009.

We would love to hear about your experience working with your AUSSIE consultants, submit your comments below….
