New Possibilities for School Improvement with Dr. Elmore
We are in an interesting time in terms of education. Never before have we had so many tools at our fingertips to impact change and use data to drive instruction in our schools. So, why are we hesitant to harness this power – are we not empowered as educators to do so? Or do time constraints hinder our efforts? Does money make us reluctant?
As I think about the actions of Superintendent, Dr. Carol R. Johnson of the Boston Public Schools and her Accelerated Education Agenda I realize the possibilities for change in the Massachusetts schools. The untapped potential for growth and achievement and the support that Dr. Johnson is putting in place is a vision for the future. She has stated, “Change is never easy, and while specific actions may seem instant and quick, sustained/transformative change requires a reshaping of our cultural frame of reference and a shift in how we leverage limited resources with other partners…to achieve the outcomes we want for children.”
With Dr. Johnson’s words in mind I am honored to be partnering with the educational communities in and around the Boston area to provide a symposium on May 5th. The day will begin at noon with a light lunch followed by a presentation from educators Brian Green, an AUSSIE consultant with over 30 years experience as a teacher, assistant principal, and curriculum leader, and Daniel Storchan, an educational technology specialist, and experienced teacher. They will provide an arena for sharing tips to bring about change at the school level through developing 21st Century learning communities.
Following the educator driven portion of the afternoon, Dr. Richard Elmore will help us to Explore New Possibilities for School Improvement. He will offer practical strategies to help support school leadership increase the capacity within their schools in times when budget cutbacks, higher expectations and greater pressure have become a way of life for school administrators. This part of the symposium will culminate in a wine and cheese reception.
